Helen Andersson, FACE Stockholm's Lead Makeup Artist and Educator, has earned international acclaim for her proficient and diverse work in all aspects of print, film, and media. It is for this reason that each and every one of FACE Stockholm's makeup artists in the US participate in training with Helen, and each comes away with not only the required skills, but a new and enlightened approach to makeup application.

Helen believes that makeup artistry is more than skin deep: a subject's mood, personality, body and mind must all be taken into consideration. "I look at makeup like sculpting more than like painting," Helen says, "When I'm thinking about someone's skin, I think about all of their features, it's more than just painting on colors."

Helen's holistic approach comes in part from growing up in the Swedish countryside, where she learned from her grandfather about the power of natural healing. From that early foundation, she went on to study herbs and natural therapies such as Ayurveda, the ancient Indian system of traditional medicine, in both America and India.

This knowledge has been essential to her work as a makeup artist and the relationships Helen develops with her clients, whether they are celebrities, retail shop walk-ins or returning customers, have made her one of the most in-demand artists in FACE Stockholm's history.

Helen's bridal makeup services at FACE Stockholm are particularly sought after and her work has been featured in many publications, including Martha Stewart Weddings and Essence Magazine.

Listening to Helen talk about her favorite experiences over the span of an 18 year makeup career in New York City, most people would go from being wide eyed and starstruck to outraged at the sheer calamity that occur on a film set. Helen remembers a series of commercials for Diesel that were more like short films, so involved were their story lines and details. One of these was shot in a swamp in New Orleans. "It was a real life adventure of gargantuan snakes and poisonous spiders dropping down from the trees...we had guards with guns there to protect us from the alligators and crocodiles in case they were hanging around the set." Click here to watch. Not exactly boring stuff, but that wasn't even the commercial that got itself banned from daytime MTV because of its rating. That particular storyline involved a deserted Miami street in the middle of the night, with actor(and Madonna ex)Tony Ward, chasing a Danish model with a chainsaw. Turns out, Tony was only trying to cut the models birthday cake, but you don't find that out until the end of the commercial.

Helen is currently the Lead Educator at FACE Stockholm’s Make Up School in Rhinebeck, NY. Her professional makeup artist training curriculum incorporates a comprehensive history of makeup artistry with practical hands-on instruction for the students in technique and professional practice. Our Fall Look is designed around our rich new lipstick color, Beloved- a deep, scarlet berry. Lead Artist and Educator, Helen Andersson, used the glamorous shade to create a look evocative of the polished beauties of the 1940's and '50's. Helen loved the looks worn by Kate Winslet in "Revolutionary Road" and Drew Barrymore in "Grey Gardens", that paid homage to the post-war elegance of classic film stars.

Makeup Artist Profile SWEDEN!

Swedish makeup artist Jessica Jarmteg is the head of the FACE Stockholm Make Up School in Sweden.

After training at the Glauca Rossi School of Makeup in London, Jessica worked for about ten years as a makeup artist on several different productions at one of Sweden's largest TV channels.

She has worked with many international pop stars, such as Robbie Williams, Pink and several prominent models in addition to freelance work with modeling agencies and photographers in the advertising and fashion worlds.

Before beginning work at the Make Up School, Jessica worked to set up new FACE Stockholm stores around the world, including shops in London, Tokyo, Hong Kong, Honolulu and the United States.

In addition to directing and teaching at the school, Jessica also supervises her students when they participate at various outside events. On April 1, 2009, she supervised a fashion show The Grand Hotel in Stockholm.

Look for Jessica and her students also worked at these events: Hanna Montana Movie Premiere in Sweden on April 26, 2009 and a Fashion Evening by Soledad Lowe & Horacio Ramirez-Anchinelli Couture Morgan Le Fay at The Hotel Diplomat in Stockholm on May 6, 2009.

SWEDISH MID SUMMER CELEBRATION!

In Sweden, the summer is short — showing its beginnings in May, bursting forth in full glory in June and then coming to a quick end by September. By Midsummer, Sweden is lush and green and daylight lasts for all but a few short hours and Swedes celebrate these brief, halcyon days by traveling to the country with family and friends to sing traditional songs, dance around maypoles built with silver birch branches and decorated with wreaths of summer blooms and to feast on the traditional bounty of the season — herring, crawfish, new potatoes and fresh dill, young strawberries and cream.

Of course, no Midsummer celebration would be complete without many, many shots of delicious herb- and spice-infused schnapps — each of which brings about another round of increasingly boisterous (and bawdy) singing! It is a time of joyous celebration and love.

Makeup Artist Profile NEW ZEALAND!

After a very traditional upbringing on a sheep farm in New Zealand and working as a builder for 16 years, Duane followed a gut feeling and decided to pursue a career in makeup artistry.
Training at the Greasepaint School of Makeup in London, he gained valuable experience in the T.V and Film industry.

Returning to New Zealand in 2004, he worked selling makeup at various counters, developing a deep empathy with women and their perceptions of beauty. Combining this empathy with his skills and a healthy dose of humor and honesty, he discovered his passion for helping women discover their unique beauty — and more importantly, their self confidence.

“Beauty, by today’s standard, is more often than not created with the help of technology. In some cases the images of beautiful women we see in magazines are 100% computer enhanced,” says Duane.

When Duane, together with his business partner and fellow makeup artist, Martyn Virtue, discovered FACE Stockholm, with its message of empowering women, they decided to open the first FACE Stockholm store in Australasia in 2005.

On April 20, 2009 Gun Nowak, entrepreneur and founder of FACE Stockholm, received The Royal Patriotic Society Business Medal at a ceremony held at the Palace of Nobility in Stockholm, Sweden. Awarded for outstanding entrepreneurship, the medal is given by King Carl XVI Gustaf as a highlight of the Society’s annual activities.

King Gustav III founded the Society in 1772. The medals are awarded to ten individuals every year who have worked to create and develop companies that succeed in building and strengthening the Swedish tradition, national pride and economy. . .

Legend Rivera has worked with FACE Stockholm’s professional makeup team since 2006 — inspiring some of our top clients and working his magic on the runways.

In addition to his work at FACE Stockholm, Legend applies his makeup artistry to a range of different freelance projects. He has worked with many recording artists — in print as well as music videos. His favorites include a shoot with hip hop artist The Dream for Interview magazine, and a bold music video for sultry Spanish songstress, Edurne Garcia.

Legend’s most inventive work is usually in editorial: he has contributed to Glamour, NYC Moves and, most recently, assisting with Cosmopolitan’s cover girl, Katy Perry.

Legend usually finds the preparations for his celebrity clients’ public appearances most interesting; he has worked with clients for appearances at The Sundance Film Festival, The Metropolitan Opera Gala, and on The Today Show.

This past spring at New York Fashion Week, he worked on the looks at a number of shows, including: Victoria Beckham, Iodice, and Cushnie et Ochs — winners of the coveted Parsons Designer of the Year Award.

THE LEGENDARY LOOK

This Spring, Legend is taking his inspiration from the tones of yellow gold and purple he noticed all over the runways this season.

NYC FASHION WEEK

When Fashion Week hit New York this February, FACE Stockholm was delighted to work with some of our favorite designers.

Morgane Le Fay, known for their ethereal, otherworldly creations, is a personal favorite of FACE President, Martina Arfwidson.

The look at the MLF show this year was created by one of our top NYC Soho artists, Khela Tyson, and was all about gleaming illumination. To achieve the radiance reflected in the dreamy collection, our team focused on making the skin glow. We layered FACE Stockholm Tinted Mineral Moisturizers to give the face freshness and make pores disappear, and used Rome Creme Blush for a sheer bronze. Dignity Creme Highlighter on the brow bones and lids added subtle gleam, while lips were left neutral to let the skin take center stage. A little London Creme Blush in the center of lips makes the perfect natural rose stain.

Eurocircle, the social community for Europeans and like minded professionals, hosted the SARAR fashion show this year in honor of Eurocircle's 10th anniversary. SARAR is the Turkish fashion giant currently sweeping Europe and now the U.S.

The look was all about glamour and classic sophistication. Eyes were sultry, with FACE Stockholm Eye Pencil in Black layered over Gel Liner in Black to achieve clean definition. On February 12, 2009, one of the world’s leading airlines, Germany’s Lufthansa, had the distinct honor of hosting the 17th annual Grand Travel Awards in Stockholm Sweden.

Held at the Grand Hotel, companies recognized for top performance in such categories as best airline, hotel, cruise line, car rentals were awarded what has come to be known as “The Oscar of the Travel Industry.

As part of the celebration, 14 airhostesses were flown in from Frankfurt to walk the catwalk in period uniforms — with styles ranging from the 1930s through the 1990s. Makeup applications from FACE Stockholm’s artists corresponded with the look of each era.

A first class evening, the event embraced both the technological advances and distinguished fashion trends of the industry with a toast of Lufthansa’s original in-flight cocktail — Lufthansa Nostalgic — champagne with a splash of liquor. Here’s to traveling in style!

Rosersberg Palace

Rosersberg Palace is one of the best kept secrets of Sweden's royal palaces. At Rosersberg time stands still.

The Oxenstierna family built the palace in the 1630s. It became a royal palace in 1762, when the state gave Rosersberg to Gustav III's younger brother Karl XIII.

King Karl XIV Johan and Queen Desideria spent long, relaxing summers at Rosersberg.

The rooms remain almost untouched from the 1795-1825 period, with well-preserved interiors and collections. Rosersberg become the missing link between the Gustavian era and the first of the Bernadottes.

The endless park in the breathtaking landscape of Mälaren adds to the charm of Rosersberg.

A FACE Wedding

FACE Stockholm has always stood out from the pack for their inspired and individualistic approach to their customers. Once you become part of the company you understand that that same encouraging, warm environment extends to the staff as well, and that much of the success of FACE comes from the supportive team of people around us. I have grown to count many of the people I have met here as my closest friends; the way we have learned to work together has taught us a respect and camaraderie in both our professional and personal lives. I was able to show my fellow FACEs how much they mean to me at my recent wedding; it was wonderful to have so many of the people in this unique company be there to support and share with me the truly, truly amazing day. A longstanding member of our staff, Elena O’Connor, is an accomplished opera singer and we were fortunate enough to have her perform at our chapel ceremony. Her shining rendition of Handel’s ‘Ombra Mai Fu’ left everyone stunned and utterly moved. Lauren Conklin and Nicole Lyba put their years of runway and film experience to excellent use; their combined makeup artistry was responsible for the beauty and polish of every individual member of the bridal party, as well as a number of lucky guests. I myself had the honor of having our Key Makeup Artist, Helen Andersson, to complete my look, and I have never felt as beautiful or content as I did in her hands. It is wonderful to know she has been able to share that confidence with all the brides she has prepared in her work with FACE. An extremely popular addition to the day was that of “The Cake,” a masterpiece of pumpkin, chocolate and hazelnut confected by FACE Stockholm buyer Joe Pizza. Joe is also a pastry chef, and made a cake that’s elegance was contradicted only by how warm and delicious it actually tasted. Our company president, Martina, was also there to offer her support and love to all the people that she has brought together through no small talent of her own. It is a joyful experience to be a part of such a motivated, well rounded, and talented group that makes up our staff at FACE Stockholm.

FACE Rocks Cleveland

Shortly following that event, Lauren Conklin and myself, as well as two indispensable FACE team members, Legend Rivera and Enrico Contenti, were asked to contribute to a private event in Ohio. A Cleveland teenager, thirteen year old Lindsay, is a passionate fashion enthusiast. Her parents are a part of the product conglomerate that includes Aquage and Matrix, and together they have spent the last year planning her Bat Mitzvah. The theme of the reception was based around Lindsay’s involvement in the fashion industry. The finished product included a venue so grand it rivaled a Justin Timberlake concert, a banquet hall so elaborate it was like a dream sequence in a Victoria’s Secret commercial, and for the entertainment, a full scale runway show featuring Lindsay’s designs. Lindsay had all the clothes made by professional dressmakers and tailors, accompanied by a team of stylists from Manhattan’s Saks Fifth Avenue who provided all the accessories and shoes, and handpicked twelve models from a local agency. Lindsay loves FACE Stockholm, having always been drawn to the array of pigments and color options when visiting the stores in New York City. She enlisted a team of our makeup artists to be flown to Cleveland for the show, and prepared us by sending a full look book of her designs. That a person more than a decade younger than we are could show such dedication and vision was exhilarating and refreshing. The final result was a roaring success, and Lindsay herself was awesome.

A FACE Goodbye

After almost six years of devotion to FACE Stockholm, Elena O’Connor is leaving us to pursue her singing career. She has shared her lovely manner of customer service with hundreds of loyal clients, while providing an energy and enthusiasm to our stores that will be sorely missed. Best of luck to you, Elena!
